I was in an elevator this morning when I overheard someone say, “The last two girlfriends I’ve had cheated on me with someone they met on Facebook. The next time I date someone seriously, as a requirement they can’t have a Facebook account. I’m done with this.” Relationship break-ups due to Facebook are becoming more common. One reason is accessibility – it’s easier to meet more people on Facebook. Another cause of Facebook-related break-ups is the allure of what people post, but what we see is not always what is real. Many people spend a lot of time crafting their profile in order to appear a certain way. Often times, when we get to know someone off line, we discover that how they appear on Facebook (and other social media sites) is not necessarily who they really are.
